Subscription management vs subscription billing

The difference between subscription billing tools and customer-facing subscription management.

"Subscription billing" and "subscription management" are often used to mean the same thing, but they cover different jobs.

Billing

Billing covers the money side: plans, charges, invoices, taxes, retries and payment methods.

Management

Management covers the customer experience and operations: what is in the subscription, when each item ships, and what the customer can change themselves, as well as how orders reach fulfilment and what that means for inventory.

Why the difference matters

Tools built mainly around billing tend to model subscriptions as fixed plans. Personalised, bundled subscriptions need a model that puts the products first. The original Subundl site set its approach against "inflexible subscriptions with a 'one size fits all' approach". Antler's 2021 profile described the company's view that existing subscription software "is built around billing".
